Food, Inc. (the movie)

written by Drew | 2010.5 Wed 06 Jan

Last night I had the pleasure of watching a movie called Food, Inc (and here’s an IMDb link), plainly out of curiosity and without having heard of the film.

First off, I would encourage anyone who is the least bit concerned with what we put in our bodies, and who watches what they eat, to watch that film: especially if you live outside of America and your country is doing its best to be like America. (If you’re in the UK, like I am, too late.) It’s easy to think that the content only applies to America itself, but you can be sure that, either similar practices are being implemented in your country, or that your food is derived from American products.

LighterLife Diet, day 92

written by Drew | 2008.339 Fri 05 Dec

I’m glad to report that I’ve lost 3 1/3 lbs in the last week – particularly glad because I’ve done little to deserve it.

It means again that I’ve got less than a stone to lose, and I’ve given myself two weeks to do it in. It’s possible but going to be very challenging.

It appears that the strategy of having two shakes at once in the morning is working; I don’t have to worry so much about having four “meals” a day. However, it’s incredibly important to use a blender to mix this double shake. You can get away with using a shaker, as long as you sift out the nasty lumps.

What also helps is adding some Fibersure (or equivalent) to the shake before blending or shaking it. I’ve had long-standing problems with constipation – primarily because I prefer dry foods over “wet” ones – and gas, and there’s no doubt that going to the toilet takes pounds off. Give it a try anyway.

LighterLife Diet, day 84

written by Drew | 2008.332 Fri 28 Nov

Well, the big day finally arrived… and went just as quickly. What was supposed to be the end of the Foundation phase became just another weigh-in.

At the weigh-in yesterday I’d lost 2 ¾ lbs – which means, for the second time, that I’ve gained weight. Remember that I didn’t go to the group session last week, so my weight loss this week was compared to two weeks ago.

It also means that I’m back behind the four stone barrier, and probably also back above 210 lbs. (It will take a while to calculate.) However, if you knew what I’d experienced last week, you’d probably understand.

I only have 16 lbs to lose now, having lost just over 54 lbs in total, and it can be done before the year is out. I consciously decided to keep going until the goal is reached, which means that day 84 isn’t the end of the Foundation phase.

I just have to be disciplined about it, and remember how big and grotesque I used to be – to prevent myself going back there.

LighterLife Diet, day 55-56

written by Drew | 2008.304 Fri 31 Oct

3 ¾ lbs this week.

This was after abstaining entirely from food since Friday afternoon, when – after waiting three hours in a hospital to be told “there’s not much we can do” – I had a Reggae Reggae sub from Subway.
The promotional sub sandwich itself was bullshit; despite being one of the most expensive, it was simply regular chicken with a pile of marinaded peppers put on top. I’ve tried the famous Reggae Reggae sauce (before the diet), and there was hardly any resemblance.

Anyway, losing less than 2 lbs last week made me get serious about losing more weight last week. The ketosis stick turning dark red almost immediately yesterday gave me hope, but I will admit to being disappointed to lose just 3 ¾ lbs.
It does mean, however, that I’ve broken two barriers at once: the 100kg barrier and the three stones loss barrier. Yesterday saw me coming in at 99.8kg, which leaves me ten pounds short of my 210 lb target for this year.

Statistics aside, last night raised an interesting point.

For anyone considering doing the LighterLife diet, you will probably come across people who will criticise you for taking part in it, and particularly the diet itself. They’ll say that it’s an unhealthy diet and that you’re stupid for putting your body at risk, while “stepping in” and giving you alternatives.

All I have to say about these people, in the kindest way possible, is that they’re the ones who have criticised you for being who you were in the beginning, and will still find some fault with you in the future. They’re people who don’t know what they’re talking about, and see you as a threat to their existence because you’re willing to do whatever it takes to change your life.

I’ve been around too many people like that in my life, and now I find ways of distancing myself from them. I don’t know about you, but this kind of thing seems to be more common in women than other men (men will just make fun of you).

Listen, I will advise one thing: like with cosmetic surgery, or any other life-changing thing, make sure you want to do it because you want to do it; don’t conform to these artificial images of what society, the media, or even your close friends and family dictate to you. Like my mom, other people’s minds are always changing, and very very few people are consistent in their thinking.

LighterLife Diet, day 42

Nothing much to report today, except that last night I was weighed.

Amazingly, despite having eaten (but not since day 39), I lost six pounds.
