Soul Mates

written by Drew | 2009.285 Tue 13 Oct

A “soul mate” is someone who comes into your life to make an impact on you. Most of the time they test the limits of your comfort zone, or teach you a valuable lesson about life and/or yourself. And they are around for as long as they have to be.

That’s my understanding of the concept, mostly inspired by a matchmaker named Joan Goldstein.

A lot of the time when people talk about “soul mates”, they’re referring to a Prince Charming, or Mr/Miss Right, who will rescue them from the ashes of medicority and “complete” them. Oh yes, and they have to look a certain way, have certain things, and generally do all the work.

This is a lot like the white knight, or the knight in shining armour, that we’ve been told isn’t going to appear. (And even if they did, we’d be too busy trying to destroy them to notice.)

From my experience, a soul mate appears in your life when necessary. A soul mate hangs around for a certain amount of time, and when it’s time they will leave your life. They can be someone whom you least expect, like a teacher you’ve only met once at school, or someone you get into a conversation on a bus with.
It can even be someone you absolutely hate. Actually, quite a few people I consider to have been “soul mates” have been people I’ve despised. It’s been said that people you hate are your best teachers, because they’ll push your buttons.

Funnily enough, we have absolutely no control over any of those things.

My First Bollywood Movie

written by Drew | 2009.209 Wed 29 Jul

I’m all about expanding my comfort zone, and trying new things. I’m certainly more about trying new things than most people. But when someone tried to convince me to go see a Bollywood movie, I admit I was scared.

Probably the main reason why anyone’s scared of anything, is because they don’t know enough about it in the first place. I knew very little about Bollywood movies to begin with, other than that they were very long compared to Hollywood movies (around three hours) and had an interval, as well as lots of music and dancing. I remember assuming they were essentially a “long music video”.

Anyway, the film I went to see was called Luck (Aazma). From the poster displayed in the cinema and on the Internet, I would have had as much of a clue about the film’s plot as a project manager would about how to – well – do anything. However, I had a good vibe about the film generally, solely based on the poster.

I won’t give any details on what the film was about, but I can say it was one of the best films I’ve seen at a cinema for a long time. Even though it was three hours long, I was engrossed in the film the entire time. It was so good that I’m getting hold of the soundtrack and the film itself.

Would I go and see another Bollywood movie? I’m not sure, if for no other reason than Luck being a tough act to follow. But as I always say, it’s better to experience things for yourself, than to back out and have preconceptions.
