The Knife Analogy

written by Drew | 2009.328 Wed 25 Nov

I tend to use the analogy of a knife a lot, whether in writing or in conversation. I refer to some things as “stabbing” or “cutting” someone, and I sometimes say things like,

it would help if you put the knife down

and

if you’re trying to give me a helping hand, it would help if there wasn’t a knife in it.

Perhaps it’s a reflection of the knife-related crime that plagued the news in recent times, and people screaming “shank shank shank” on music tracks – particularly when I was still living near one of the most notorious (and probably mythical) crime hotspots. I found it intriguing that murderers had turned to stabbing and cutting people, rather than other creative forms of killing such as shooting or poisoning.

An Analogy for Picking Up Partners

Solely from my perspective (after all, that’s why this site’s called DREWspective)…

A woman getting with a man is like buying groceries.
These days you don’t even have to do anything: either you order something online, or get someone else to do the shopping for you. In the worst possible scenario, you’d have to get off your arse and go to the shop yourself. All you’d then have to do is pick the item off the shelf.
Granted, it might turn out that they’ve run out of whatever you want to buy, but it doesn’t matter – just go to another shop.

A man getting with a woman is like winning an auction.
First you’ve got to find the auction house. Then you bide your time, until something you really want goes under the hammer.
When you get into the auction room you find there are hundreds of other people there, all after the same prize.
You bid and you bid and you bid and you bid some more, until the hammer gets dropped. And though there’s a very slim chance that you could win, the likelihood is you’ve been trumped by some guy with way more money.
