I’m all about expanding my comfort zone, and trying new things. I’m certainly more about trying new things than most people. But when someone tried to convince me to go see a Bollywood movie, I admit I was scared.
Probably the main reason why anyone’s scared of anything, is because they don’t know enough about it in the first place. I knew very little about Bollywood movies to begin with, other than that they were very long compared to Hollywood movies (around three hours) and had an interval, as well as lots of music and dancing. I remember assuming they were essentially a “long music video”.
Anyway, the film I went to see was called Luck (Aazma). From the poster displayed in the cinema and on the Internet, I would have had as much of a clue about the film’s plot as a project manager would about how to – well – do anything. However, I had a good vibe about the film generally, solely based on the poster.
I won’t give any details on what the film was about, but I can say it was one of the best films I’ve seen at a cinema for a long time. Even though it was three hours long, I was engrossed in the film the entire time. It was so good that I’m getting hold of the soundtrack and the film itself.
Would I go and see another Bollywood movie? I’m not sure, if for no other reason than Luck being a tough act to follow. But as I always say, it’s better to experience things for yourself, than to back out and have preconceptions.
